ELECTION DAY is today and the UK is heading to the polls to cast their votes. Where is YOUR local polling station?

The time is up for campaigning, and now voters will make their decisions and cast their votes in the first December general election since 1923. Polling stations opened at 7am and votes will be cast right up until 10pm.

Votes will then be counted and results are expected to be announced in the early hours of Friday morning.

Issues shaping this election include Brexit, the NHS, the economy and climate change, with each party’s manifesto promising different things.

On the last day of the campaign, party leaders attended rallies and spoke to voters.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was at a Labour rally in Middlesbrough, while Mr Johnson began Wednesday in Pudsey in West Yorkshire, insisting he was “fighting for every vote”.

He told reporters: “This could not be more critical, it could not be tighter – I just say to everybody the risk is very real that we could tomorrow be going into another hung parliament.”

People outside the polling station called “tellers” may ask you for the number on your polling card.

These people are volunteering on behalf of candidates – and often wear rosettes – and they use the information to check who has voted and remind people who have not to do so.

The Electoral Commission says: “They are allowed to be there and to ask for the information, but you don’t have to give them any information if you don’t want to.

“If you are concerned about the conduct of a teller, speak to a member of staff at the polling station.”

After voting has ended and polls close an exit poll will give the first insight into how the election results may go.

It will be announced live on the BBC, ITV and Sky News and with each of the past few elections, the exit poll has produced a very accurate projection of the actual result.

Fieldwork will be carried out by polling company Ipsos Mori, with tens of thousands of interviews conducted at 144 polling stations across the country.

On leaving one of these stations, voters will be asked throughout polling day, using a mock ballot paper, how they just voted.
