The Service Employees International Union’s (SEIU) Florida State Council appointed Marcus Dixon as its new executive director, the group announced Wednesday.

The SEIU selected Dixon after a nationwide search. Dixon will manage and oversee the group’s electoral, legislative and outreach operations in Florida.

Dixon is a Florida native and has worked for more than ten years in the state’s political and policy industry. He most recently served as the SEIU Florida’s political director where he developed and implemented the group’s legislative and political action plans to strengthen its overall goals.

“Marcus Dixon has a proven track record of success when it comes to political and legislative campaigns. We are thrilled to have him continue his work at the SEIU Florida State Council as our new Executive Director,” said SEIU State Council Acting President, Martha Baker. “Marcus is one of Florida’s preeminent policy and political strategists and is well suited to lead the State Council through the next several years – which will be critical for the future of our state.”

Before working with the SEIU, Dixon served as a policy advisor to Jean Monestime who was the then-chair of the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners. In that role, Dixon managed Monestime’s Council for Prosperity initiatives including by drafting and advising on policies.

“It’s a real honor to take on this new role as executive director. I’m excited to continue this work with an organization that is so genuinely focused on improving the conditions of poor and working people. Whether on the issues of quality, affordable healthcare, safety on the job, racial justice, economic justice, community wealth or having a voice at the tables where decisions are being made, SEIU Florida is at the forefront of the movement. I look forward to the important work ahead for our members and the communities where they live, work and play,” Dixon said.

Dixon’s experience also includes his work as the policy director for Congresswoman Frederica Wilson and in various roles on political campaigns. He began his career as a Gubernatorial Fellow in the Executive Office of the Governor, after serving as the student body vice president at the University of Florida. Dixon has a dual degree in Public Relations and Political Science from the University of Florida and a Masters of Public Administration from Florida State University.

The SEIU Florida State Council works to improve the lives of working people and their families. The group builds political involvement of more than 55,000 SEIU members throughout the state. The State Council’s board is comprised of elected leaders, members and staff of the five SEIU Local Unions.  The SEIU is the second-largest and fastest-growing union in North America with 2.1 million members, including more than 55,000 active and retired healthcare professionals, public employees, and property service workers in the state of Florida.
